Mastodon are one of modern metal’s most prolific purveyors of the riff. The Atlanta band’s eclectic catalog is packed with memorable, technical and physically crushing guitar passages that weave between sludge, prog, and classic heavy metal with a level of proficiency that few other bands have achieved. Their music can be jammy and tuneful, but guitarists Bill Kelliher and Brent Hinds always keep their songs grounded with massively heavy riffs. There’re so many ten-ton guitar parts in their catalog to choose from, but we had the riff-meisters themselves pick — and play along with — what they deem the heaviest in their repertoire.
